According to a series of recent publications, BMW is working hard on bringing a sportier version of their refreshed BMX X3 compact crossover vehicle. Called the BMW X4, it will share its underpinnings with the 2010MY X3 and will be to the SUV as the X6 is to the family-oriented X5. I.e. it will be most popular among young chicks and guys not burdened with family, kids and a mortgage. It will be the choice of an egoist.
Looks like we will soon see a whole bunch of performance compact crossover SUVs that will be fuel-efficient, city-friendly and affordable (at least, when compared to current mid- and full-size SUVs.)
Of course, the SUV will be targeted against recently announced Range Rover Evoque and the Porsche Cajun compact crossovers.
The car-based SUV will probably feature a coupe-style design of its body similar to that of the BMW X6. It will seat only four grown-ups, but I can bet a bottle of Glenfiddich that 99 percent of the time it will be occupied only by one.
According to AutoWeek, there will also be a high-performance BMW X4M version of the car that will have a twin-turbo inline six-cylinder powerplant coupled to a seven-speed DCT dual-clutch gearbox. The rest of the pack may be presented with a choice of three engines: a 2.0-liter and a 3.0-liter diesel, as well as a 3.0-liter powerplant working on gasoline.
Frankly speaking, I really hope that BMW will also present an ActiveHybrid version of the car, because Porsche is planning such a system for their Cajun vehicle.
The BMW X4 Concept will probably see the light sometime next year.
